CHAPTER BYLAWS

Iota Pi Chapter Bylaws

 

Article 1: Name of the Organization


The name of this organization shall be the Iota Pi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland.

 

Article 2: The Objectives and Purposes of the Chapter


Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary honors organization for accounting, finance, and information systems majors. Its stated purposes includes recognizing scholastic and professional excellence in the fields of accounting, finance, or information systems with the provision of opportunities for self-development and association among members and practicing business professionals; and encouragement of a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility. To create an environment conducive to interaction between practicing professionals, students, faculty, and the community through professional activities, community services, socials, academic excellence. To complement a student's formal education with the practical knowledge to succeed in today's financial information world.

 

Article 3: Membership

 

Requirements to become a candidate


Requirements of attaining candidate status, (at a minimum) the student must have:

  • Declared a concentration in accounting, finance, or information systems (or have stated an intention to declare a concentration in accounting, finance, or information systems)

  • Paid a $90 candidate fee for two semesters

 

Requirements to elevation to membership in this chapter candidate must have:

 

  • Declared a concentration in accounting, finance, or information systems

  • Completed, in addition to 3 semesters of collegiate courses, at least one upper level course beyond the business core

  • Completed two (2) successive semesters of candidacy (Fall & Spring)

  • A minimum GPA 3.2 (overall & major)

 

Members and candidates will be moved to inactive status if:

  • If a member's or candidate's participation level drops below fifty percent (50%) - as determined by the discretion of the officers

  • If a member or candidate is inactive, they will not be eligible to become active again until the following semester

  • In order to regain active status, they must have:

    • At least seventy-five percent (75%) involvement in all activities of the chapter from that point forward

    • Petitioned officers for reinstatement to active status

 

Method of Member Removal:

 

  • Member certificate will be held until one (1) semester prior to graduation

  • Member must be charged of malfeasance in writing to faculty advisor and signed by a member of Beta Alpha Psi

  • Accused member must receive a copy of charges against him/her, time, date, and place of hearing, and an explanation

  • Hearing will be held in front of officers to determine if member is to be expelled

 

Article 4: Meetings for the Conduct of Business

 

Actions which require voting shall require a two-thirds majority of voting members present in a valid quorum. Only current members are eligible to vote.

  • To constitute a quorum, more than fifty percent (50%) of current members, and at least of the two following must be present:

    • President

    • Faculty Advisor

    • Vice President of Internal Affairs

    • Vice President of External Affairs

 

Voting requirements for chapter decisions:

  • Two-thirds (2/3) of all members present must approve

  • Officer elections are decided by a simple majority of votes

 

Article 5: Student Officers


President
The president presides at meetings of the chapter, determines that all reporting responsibilities and other duties of the vice president, secretary, and treasurer are performed in accordance with International Constitution and Bylaws; and seeks to promote the welfare of the chapter and Beta Alpha Psi. Overall, the president is the figure head and inspiration to the chapter.

Vice President

  • The Internal Vice President assists the President in the internal operating activities of the chapter. The Internal Vice President acts in the President's place in the event of absence or incapacity. In the event the office of the President is vacant, the Internal Vice President shall assume the duties and responsibilities of the President.

  • The External Vice President conducts all activity performed in the community, including community service projects, public relations, and fundraising.

  • Has the right to form a quorum to call an election between the Internal and External Vice Presidents in the event the office of the President is vacant.


Treasurer
The treasurer collects money owed to the chapter, disburses for authorized purposes, ensures that the remittance of candidates fees; initiation fees and chapter dues are paid in accordance with the Program of Chapter Activities, maintains appropriate financial records, arranges for the audit, if one is required by the Executive Office or if one desire by the local chapter, and prepares the local Chapter's tax return.

Reporter
The reporter records the minutes of the meetings of the chapter; ensures that the chapter online update is completed at least annually and that the membership roster is updated as necessary; transmits to the Executive Office a list of chapter officers within fourteen (14) days of their installation; prepares and transmits such other reports as required by the Board and the Program for Chapter Activities; and fulfills all other duties ordinarily associated with the office of the secretary.

Webmaster
The Webmaster’s role is to maintain and frequently update information on Beta Alpha Psi websites. The Webmaster will work with the Reporter to maintain the MyClasses/Blackboard site and update members and candidates’ professional and community service hours on a regular basis.

Members of the chapter are eligible to be officers in the chapter. The officers are nominated and then elected to the office following the guidelines for elections in the Chapter Handbook.

The term of office for officers is from the end of the spring semester to the end of the next spring semester. Near the end of the spring semester elections are held and the officers take over their duties and prepare the chapter for the next year.

An officer can resign when they feel they are no longer capable of fulfilling their duties. Elections for a replacement will be held in the case of a vice president, secretary, or treasurer resignation. The replacements term will end when the rest of the officer's terms are over. In the case of a president resignation the vice president will step up to the office of president and a replacement vice president will be elected with their term ending when the rest of the officer's terms are over.

 

Article 6: Faculty Advisor


The faculty advisor serves as the advisor to the chapter and when requested to do so by the Board attests to the chapter's compliance with specified provisions of the International Constitution, Bylaws, and Program for Chapter Activities. Members nominate faculty members in the area of accounting, finance, and information systems. The faculty advisor is then elected by members of the chapter in a majority rules fashion.

 

Article 7: Conduct at Regional and Annual Meetings


Members and/or officers attending regional or annual meetings are expected to attend all events possible (within reason). Duties of those attending are to bring back information to the chapter that is beneficial to all those who participate in chapter activities.

Article 8: Fiscal Year


The fiscal year of the chapter will end on April 30.

 

Article 9: Authority


These bylaws shall be the principal governing document of the Iota Pi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi.
These bylaws will be subordinate to the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi.
Any provision of this document that conflicts with the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi that is currently in effect will be rendered null and void.

 

Article 10: Requirements for Amendment to the Bylaws


To amend the bylaws of the chapter there must be a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote. In establishing local chapter bylaws, refer to the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi for examples and to assure that there is no conflict between the chapter bylaws and those of Beta Alpha Psi.

 

Article 11: Establishment of Committees

 

The Iota Pi Chapter hereby establishes committees to assist in the various operations of the club.  The committees will be chaired by members and made up of members/candidates with one executive board member assigned to each committee.  

 

These committees may include, but are not limited to:

  • Gold Challenge Committee

  • Awards Committee

  • Community Service Committee

  • Fundraising Committee

  • Scholarship Committee

  • Relay for Life Committee

  • VITA Committee

 

Article 12: Internal Controls

 

All outgoing checks must be reviewed and signed by two separate officers.

  • Checks shall be signed by either the Treasurer, the President, or both.

  • Additional signers may include:

    • Internal  Vice President.

    • External Vice President.

    • Faculty Advisor

  • o    The Treasurer and one other officer must review the monthly bank statements for accuracy.

 

Each reviewing officer shall sign his or her name at the bottom of each bank statement following the review.
